"You have to sign a 10-year contract for Roberts." ML coach expects a whopping $80 million 'super-shattering treatment' in the low-wage era

It has been argued that the Los Angeles Dodgers should sign a 10-year, ultra-long contract with manager Dave Roberts. It was expected to cost 80 million U.S. dollars, which is equivalent to almost any player.

Jim Borden, a former Cincinnati Reds and Montreal Expos general manager, predicted seven things expected to happen in the remaining offseason on the 25th (Korean time) with Major League Spring Training just weeks away. The first thing to mention was the extension contract between the Dodgers and Roberts. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes predicted an extension contract at a general manager's meeting in November after last year's season, saying, "I hope I can see Roberts as long as possible."

"The Dodgers have been very active in the FA market with more than $375 million in contracts, including $182 million for Blake Snell, $72 million for Tanner Scott, $66 million for Teoscar Hernandez, $22 million for Blake Trinen, $17 million for Michael Confoto, $12.5 million for Kim Hye-sung, and $6.5 million for Sasaki Rocky. This is not the end of his career, but the recruitment of Kirby Yates, who made 33 saves for the Texas Rangers last year, is also set to win the World Series. He once again became the favorite to win the World Series as the winner of the previous year. The offseason was also great," he said, talking about the extension contract with Roberts as the last task. 스포츠토토

Boden said, "It's time for the Dodgers to sign a record-breaking extension contract with Roberts. As a Dodgers manager, Roberts has posted an impressive 851 wins and 506 losses along with eight district No. 1 titles in nine years. He has won more than 100 titles in five seasons and posted more than 90 wins in all seasons except 2020. He also recorded 43 wins and 17 losses in the shorter 2020 season," and added, "He led the team to two World Series titles with a 6227 regular season win rate. He is a great coach who deserves to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the future."

Furthermore, Borden predicted a mega-contract that includes "Roberts is under contract until 2025 and the next extension will break all records. Manager Craig Counsell's five-year, $40 million contract with the Chicago Cubs in 2023 has become a new standard for managers, and Roberts' contract will blow it away," adding, "I think he should receive more than the $66 million Hernandez received and the $72 million Scott received." A 10-year, $80 million contract would be appropriate. If the Dodgers want to postpone a significant portion of their salary as they always do, it will also help Roberts' life after he leaves the manager's post."

In the Major League, where managerial influence has been reduced significantly due to general managerial baseball, managerial treatment is also low. According to USA Today's report in October 2023, six managers were paid less than 1 million dollars and 15 managers were paid less than 1.75 million dollars. In contrast, 10 coaches of college teams earned more than 1.2 million dollars a year. Vanderbilt University coach Tim Corbin's $2.47 million salary was the highest.

On the reality of managers suffering from low wages, a Major League manager said at the time, "What a shame. Does it make sense for a college team manager to make more money than us? That is wrong. It has become natural to leave the Major League and go to college."

Coach Counsell, who moved to the Cubs after his contract with the Milwaukee Brewers ended in November 2023, received the highest treatment ever with five years and $40 million. It took 17 years for Joe Torre, who led the New York Yankees in 2007, to break the record of $7.5 million in managerial salary.

Roberts, who signed a three-year extension contract with the Dodgers in March 2022, is receiving an annual salary of $3.25 million. There are many reasons why Roberts should be treated better than Counsell, who had no World Series victory, although the Dodgers team's performance was so good. Borden, who is well-known for his unconventional predictions, insisted on a 10-year, $80 million contract, which doubles the length and total amount of the contract compared to Counsell's five-year, $40 million. Even if not this much, Roberts is expected to become the new standard as the highest condition ever for Counsell. As spring training is only two weeks away, a contract announcement is expected within that period.
